Italian Baroque Inspiration

This past weekend i went to the Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo de Buenos Aires (Museum of Decorative Art of Buenos Aires) to visit especially an exposition about Cortesans Costumes of the Baroque Italy (from the 17th and 18th centuries).

That's me at the entrance of the Museum
Some of this costumes brought me a little reminiscence of some couture shows from the Spring Summer collections. See by yourself...

AP, Kate Moss, The White Wedding and rediscovering Nick Knight

Just a couple of days ago i got my Agent Provocateur newsletter in order to present their new Bridal Collection. But of course they did it in the most original way: trough six videos provided by the visionary photographer Nick Knight. The images were stunning and the history behind White Wedding (the story represented by Kate Moss, of course) was great.

(The films are exclusively available to view at www.showstudio.com)

But these videos left me wanting to see more of Knight's work. So i went through some research ...

Nick Knight is one of the world’s most influential photographers. He has won numerous awards for his editorial work for Vogue, Dazed & Confused, W magazine, i-D, and Visionaire, as well as for fashion and advertising projects for clients including Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, Calvin Klein, Levi Strauss, Yohji Yamamoto and Yves Saint Laurent. His work has been exhibited at such institutions as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Saatchi Gallery, the Photographers Gallery and Hayward Gallery and recently The Tate Modern.  He has produced a permanent installation, Plant Power, for the Natural History Museum in London.

He also was in charged of the photographs for the 2004 Pirelli Calendar:

Nick Knight is also the director and founder of Showstudio.com, an "online fashion broadcasting company committed to pioneering, live fashion media".

Hope you liked it, i loved it.

One fashion book a day keeps the stylist away!

Either you are a book worm or not, every fashionista must have some fashion reads (and I’m not talking about Vogue or Haarper’s issues). In my opinion you have to, at least, have a fashion book in some of these categories:

Self Improvement / Style Guides

- How to walk in high heels? By Camilla Morton
Ok, this book truly is the Girl’s guide to everything! I would actually call it The Bible for the Modern Women. From how to fit everything in your handbag to how to rock with your iPod this woman not only knows what she is talking about but she makes it in a really funny style.

- The Goddess Guide by Gisele Scanlon
This book is kind of a scrapbook of tips, interviews, memories, advices, etc of the author’s adventures trough her stylish life. I loved this book not only because of its esthetics but because it is easy to read when your traveling or if you just want to know something about anything fashionable.

- Style A to Zoe by Rachel Zoe
I know that Rachel Zoe might not be the best person to ask for a fashion advice (except you want to look like a “over exited girl with bangles neohippie”) but some things she wrote in her book (if she even wrote it) are not that bad at all. Well, actually there are some completely rational advices that every stylish woman should put on use. (Besides was this one or “The extra half inch” by Victoria Beckham and I was NOT going to contribute with her bank account!).

- The little Black Book of Style by Nina Garcia
I haven’t read it but I looove Nina Garcia and her style so I know she can’t be wrong…with anything that relates to fashion.

Icons/Photography

Either you are a big fan of a pair of All Stars or Maddona, these kind of books are most of all inspirational (image wise speaking).

Some other examples …
- Fruits and Fresh Fruits by Shoichi Aoki
Street fashion from Japan. A must have.

Sociology

Ok, I admit that these kind of books are for fashionistas that are really really interested in the social side of fashion (otherwise you will want to kill yourself slowly while reading).

- El Imperio de lo Efìmero (L' Empire de l'èphémère) by Gilles Lipovetsky
This book answers some questions about the origins of fashion only to make us questions about its meaning in the present.

- El Sistema de la Moda y otros escritos (Systéme de la Mode) by Roland Barthes
This book questions fashion from a different point of view: trough the description of clothes, but also trough the social signs that make it possible.

Some other examples …
- The End of Fashion: How Marketing Changed the Clothing Business Forever by Teri Agins
This book tells all the backstage, all the things about fashion designers, all the things you wanna know. All with a lot of fashion industry information.

Diccionaries

Either it’s about fashion designers to clothes history these kind of books sometimes teach us things that a true fashionista must know.

- El vestidito negro (The Classic Ten: The True Story of the Little Black Dress and Nine Other Fashion Favorites) by Nancy MacDonell Smith
This is a great book, the writing is fresh, easy and interesting, and each chapter holds it's own.

- Fashion Now!by Terry Jones
This book contains a summary of the biographies and work of the most renowed fashion designers and the emerging talent on the fashion industry. Big reference book.

Other examples...

- Fashion (A Crash Course) by Andrew Tucker

It goes through history (in a rather disorderly way) and writes about the different fashions of the times, different designers and how time developed the current clothes we wear today.
